A Home-based Intervention Program for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Objective: Improvements of cognition, adaptive behavior, and language development have been found to be associated with early intervention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, children with ASD in disadvantaged families are lack of the chance to access to early intervention. Recent studies have shown that family-centered naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions can help children with ASD learning new skills. Nevertheless, little studies have been conducted in ASD children in Taiwan. Method: This study recruited 10 disadvantaged families with children with ASD aged 40-62 months to join the Home-based Autism Service Intervention Program (HASI program). The parents received 12 weekly sessions to integrate developmental and behavioral intervention techniques into daily activities of the children. Results: The results revealed that children with ASD demonstrated improvements in multiple domains of functioning. Furthermore, parents were satisfied with the contents of the HASI program. Conclusion: The program developed in this study can be a preliminary model to effectively provide evidence-based behavioral intervention for children with ASD and their families in Taiwan.
