The term "散文" has always been ambiguous in definition. This paper attempts to analyze how prose evolves from classical literature to modern times as a contemporary literary genre through several significant definitions from the New Literature period. Through the interpretations of modern prose by Kuriyagawa Hakuson, Zhou Zuoren, and Yu Dafu, it can be understood how modern prose explores its core values within the context of translation terminology and Chinese literary history. By examining the writing methods of Xia Miezun's "文章作法 " in comparison with Yao Nai's " 古文辭類纂 ," it is connected to the literary theories and literary views of the Tongcheng School of ancient prose, speculating on how modern prose inherits the subjective ethical norms between authors and works such as "文如其人 " and "修辭立其誠." Through this series of observations, it can be glimpsed that "modern prose" as a "literary genre" traces its origins in lyricism in terms of content and artistic expression.
