Pneumonia Leading to Respiratory Failure a Case Report A 76 year old woman was admitted to the hospital suffering from hypertension and a stroke. Shortly after entering the hospital she developed pneumonia which led to respiratory failure. She was put on respiratory support and received numerous antibiotics, but because her fever persisted, her family sought help from a Chinese medicine doctor. Traditional Chinese medicine has provided positive results in regard to this disease, providing those who have pursued this field of study with numerous reference materials and guidance. Respiratory failure belongs to the category Chinese medicine refers to as ”qi desertion”. The etiology and pathomechanisms are that of exuberant congestion of heat evil, heat sinking into the pericardium, internal block with external collapse, lung and stomach yin vacuity, liver and kidney yin vacuity, and qi desertion. This case history is an example of heat evil causing lung and stomach yin vacuity, phlegm heat congestion and stagnation, and inhibition of the triple burner leading to respiratory failure. Treatment aims primarily at harmonizing the lesser yang while also clearing heat and resolving toxins, supplementing qi, nourishing yin and engendering fluids. Treatment and care were given by both Western and Chinese methods until the patient left the hospital fully recovered.
