A Study on the Political Legitimacy of Emperor Xuanzong (712-756)

The issue of the legitimacy of state power was the core of political thought in ancient China that linked blood ties, culture, and social morality, and ran through the upper ruling class and the lower public's social and moral education. After the upheaval of the Tang Dynasty during the Wu Zhou regime, the power struggle of the Wei and Wu groups, and the usurpation and misrule by Princess Anle and Princess Taiping, the newly established Xuanzong reign was rife with power games from various political forces and was in urgent need of establishing a regularized and institutionalized central power system. Consequently, the Li Tang rulers constructed an ideological control system serving the legitimacy of the regime and the monarch's power. Emperor Xuanzong, by combining secular and religious thought means, employed divination, the theory of the Five Virtues' Cycle, and the erwangsankezhi, among others, to establish the initial political legitimacy argument. He conducted the Fengshan Sacrifice on Mount Tai and connected the legitimacy and authority of the state with the ethical and cultural psychological domains such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, and "he filial piety of the emperor" to consolidate his political legitimacy. Eventually, he achieved the normalization of "political ethicization" and "ethical politicization" in political thought operation, and accomplished the fundamental goal of establishing and maintaining the regime of the dynasty.
