Genealogy is the study of the history of a race, and sometimes is equivalent to the history of the race. From the history of a family, we can trace their lineage directly back to its progenitors and thereby maintain the tradition of the tribe by which the whole tribe may be unified. Recent studies of genealogy seldom include those of the aboriginal people here in Taiwan, but it doesn't mean they don't have their lineages. Aboriginal Ping-pu tribes have been living in Taiwan with a very long history, and researchers usually call them "Austronesian". Their traditional customs have been changed a lot because they don't have written language of their own and there have been early contacts with other people. It is also very difficult to find their "roots" in history because their oral language hasn't been spoken by anyone for many years. Rev. Pang has recently compiled a book of lineage which took him three years to document the lineage of a family of the aboriginal Ping-pu tribe living here in Tai-chung County. This study is to investigate the cause, mood, and methods of Ping-pu people who took part in the process of compiling a book of lineage. The purpose of this study is to document the ethnographical and historical aspects of the Ping-pu people. Lineage is a document of a family and has its historical values; therefore we must be very careful in preserving and documenting its lineage which will attest to the development of aboriginal people here in Taiwan.
