”Bushido: The Soul of Japan” composed by Nitobe Inazô has crucial influence to Europe, America and Japan. By now there are many researches on ”Bushido,” however; there is very tiny literary research or ideological research into the article itself. The ultimate and core purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to explore to the significance of the creation of ”Bushido: The Soul of Japan,” which is divided into two parts tracing the ideological ordeals that the author Nitobe had experienced before he wrote this book. The focus of Part I tries to depict and clarify the spiritual ordeals and the derived spiritual dilemma the author of ”Bushido” encountered, in which firstly we may realize that, generally through the whole life of Nitobe, his professor time at Sapporo Agricultural College was full of fresh experience and distress. Secondly, further observation is at the consecutive ideological controversy after the promulgation of ”Kyôikutyokugo” to know his miserable plight as a Christian under the criticism that the doctrine of Christianity was not suitable to national education policy. Hence, Nitobe, as a professor who had faith in Christianity, was forced to face a problem which was confrontation and tension between the doctrine or spirit of Christianity and what is for a long time in Japan called as the East Confucianism, which thus appears the initial spiritual background and critical mind of the author.
