A Narrow Gate to Success for Youth Entrepreneurs Analysis of Cases with Continuing Operations and Those Withdraw

In 2014, the Taiwanese government launched the Youth Entrepreneurship Project to encourage youths to start new businesses. However, entrepreneurship entails a hard course, in which only a handful of entrepreneurs manage to emerge as a success. To investigate the main factors influencing entrepreneurs in continuing their operations or withdrawing from the industry, this study explored four companies continuing operations and three withdrawing companies 3.5 years after their startup. Through materials such as feature stories, forums, and in-depth interviews, we investigated the entrepreneurial motivation, resources, bottleneck, and corresponding measures to compare the difference between continuing operations and withdrawal. The results revealed that entrepreneurs who continued their operations possessed a burning ambition and strong determination. In addition, they efficiently used their social relations to identify resources and supports and exerted their communication abilities to continuously negotiate with various parties. Moreover, this study compiled several causes of entrepreneurial failures in the hope of providing references for young entrepreneurs in the future. With the assistance of the Youth Entrepreneurship Project actively promoted by the government, Taiwanese youths are more likely to find a niche market.
