Architecture is the presentation of culture. Different living styles or cultural ideas manifest quite different architectural forms and spaces. Chinese traditional architecture has been developed for thousand of years but it does not have a lot of changes in forms and spaces. Certain life philosophies must have lain behind these living spaces and have dominated the structure of traditional spaces. Fengshui (風水) and Taoism are two examples. Lao Tzu, the philosopher who lived three thousand years ago, has a great influence on Chinese philosophy. In this paper I take Lao Tzu's philosophy ”Wu” (nothingness) and ”opposite-yet-complementary” to expound the Chinese traditional housing structure, ”courtyard” and ”street-space.” And then I use these ideas to explore Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa's works. Finally, if we can base our creation on the genuine spirit derived from tradition, no matter it is eastern or western, I believe ”the death of modern architecture” predicted by Jencks will not happen.
