Attachment Behavior in Sports Contexts: Conceptual Development and Research Review

Attachment is an important interpersonal psychology. Human beings have developed such strong and intimate feelings and behaviors from infancy in order to maintain close relationships with important others. In sports contexts, the relationship between coaches and athletes attracts many researchers' attention. In the eyes of players, coaches are not only training and guiding themselves, but also providing a sense of safety. When the players feel uneasy, confused, threatened, they can provide safety. Thus, it constitutes the elements of attachment and connecting between coaches and athletes. In recent years, attachment have gradually received attention from corporate organizations, the military to sports teams. The present article attempts to explain how the coach and the athlete form the interdependency relationship in the sports contexts through the attachment theory. We deeply analyze the development of the theory of attachment, measurement tools, measurement tools of attachment, and research sports contexts. Due to its scarce of attachment research in sports, this study uses a literature review to integrate the theory of attachment related research in order to provide research basis in coach-athlete relationship in sports.
