Purpose: To test and verify the hypothesis that report of better static balance ability in the elderly would be associated with better body mass, including normal body weight or body mass index (BMI). Method: Thirty-seven elderly people who completed all measurements were, aged 74.59±5.40 years, height 155.48±6.90 cm, weight 60.38±7.40 kg, and BMI was 24.98±2.77 kg/cm^2. The static balance indicated the path length (PL) and the body sway area (SA) of the centre of pressure were measured by five static balance tests with the stable force platform, including the one-leg standing (OLS) with eyes open, two-leg standing with feet apart (FA) and together (FT), two-leg stance positions were with eyes opened (FAO, FTO) and closed (FAC, FTC). Associations among height, weight, and the static balance were evaluated using Pearson's product-moment correlation. Results: There were significant positive correlations between BMI and SA of FAO and FTO, respectively. And the height was significant positive correlated with OLS, and the PL of the FAC, respectively. In the weight, there were also significant positive correlations between OLS, FAO, and FT, respectively. Conclusions: It showed that the taller or the heavier, the static balance worse. It was presumed that static balance might be influenced from the body mass in the elderly. Hence, the body mass and the centre of pressure might be altered, when the height or weight was changed, and the systems of body balance would be affected. To maintain the static balance, the elderly have to control the body weight, attach importance to daily diets and physical activities. Further investigations on the factors influenced balance of the elderly are required to improve the balance of the elderly.
