This paper explores how Wang Zongying(王宗英), an obscure Taiwanese poet who appeared in the mainstream Japanese poetry magazine Japanese Poets(《日本詩人》) in the 1920s, started his literary activities in Taiwan and Japan and became one of the earliest Taiwanese poets to write free verse in Japanese. First, this paper gives a brief introduction of Wang Zongying with currently known information about his background. Second, this paper explains how Wang Zongying came to know Goto Daji(後藤大治), an important poet in 1920s Taiwan, and published his poems in Tropical Poets(《熱帶詩人》), the Association of Taiwan Post Magazine(《臺灣遞信協會雜誌》), and Tainan Daily News(《臺南新報》). Third, this paper details the process through which Wang Zongying published his poems in Japanese Poets and The Annals of Poet and explores the relationship among Wang Zongying, Goto Taiji, Siwakai(詩話会), Japanese Poets, and the famous Japanese poet Satou Sounosuke(佐藤惣之助). Finally, this paper divides his poems into different stages and analyzes their development and evolution over time. Wang Zongying's poems draw on the poetic views of Siwakai; these views are the directness of feelings and daily language. Furthermore, Wang Zongying wrote poems that are unique and close to the feelings of modern Taiwanese free verse in Japanese.
