Speed is often listed as the top challenge that student interpreters and professional interpreters face regularly. This paper studies past research studies on the topic of speed and its impact on interpreter's performance. The paper will first present the context of the research studies, modes of interpretation, participant groups, language combination, speed rates involved, and the manipulation of speed in order to provide a clear picture for discussion. Next, the paper will focus on three areas that can further enhance the results of the past research studies. The three areas include: assessment of student interpreters' performance, assessing professional interpreters through user expectations, and omission errors that can justified as strategy use. This paper hopes to bring in more discussion to the translation and interpretation research field.
