Another name for Dan Tian is Ming Men. According to historical records, the relationship between Dan Tian and Ming Men is that both these terms refer to the active qi that resides between the kidneys. Both are said to be at the center of the body, residing in the same place, and having the same significance. Both are associated with the ministerial fire, and have the same functions. There are many different documents regarding each of these concepts that cite the same classical texts, such as the 8th and 66th difficulties of the Nan Jing. Some classical texts even go so far as to directly state that Ming Men is Dan Tian, or that Dan Tian is Ming Men. Although there are some slight differences regarding their point locations, and different ideas relating to each of them specifically; for example the idea of the relation ship between the kidneys and Ming Men, and the division of Dan Tian into upper, lower and middle Dan Tian, none of this affects the essential fact that Dan Tian and Ming Men are one in the same. Various sources will be referenced to provide evidence of these claims, as well as clarify and offer a deeper understanding into these two subjects.
