紅斑狼瘡是一種常見的自體免疫性疾病，它與硬皮病、皮膚炎、類風濕性關節炎等疾病因其疏鬆結締組織，均具有粘液樣水腫和類纖維蛋白性變兩種基本病變，故常總稱為結締組織疾病，又稱膠原性疾病。它們的發病原因至今尚未完全明瞭，一般認為是由於感染、日曬、藥物等因素誘發，使人體內環境發生紊亂，使本來不能夠形成的免疫活性細胞群得以發展，因而對自體某些成分出現了免疫病變反應。
