大學居我國學制中的最高層級,肩負研究、培養高階專業人才、服務社會等重要責任。大學校長的學經歷背景直接影響學校的辦學與發展。本文調查我國159 所大學中最近3 位校長共467 任423 人,並以一般教師共1590人為其參照組,進行分析。結果發現我國大學校長最可能的樣態為男性、具美國博士學位,國公立大學校長具教育學專長,私立大學校長則可能具有醫學、工學、理學、教育學、或社會學等之專長。若為中研院院士則有遠高於一般大學教師優勢可擔任國公立大學校長,曾擔任國內其他大學校長者則較一般大學教師有極大優勢較易取得私立大學校長職。但技職體系與高教體系大學校長在職涯上並無顯著差異。
This paper surveyed the characteristics of the last three presidents in 159 universities in Taiwan (423 persons for 467 terms), using 1,590 common faculty members as control. The most likely university presidents in Taiwan are male with final degrees awarded in the USA. The public universities likely have presidents with the specialty of pedagogy; and private universities have presidents with the specialty of medicine, engineering, physics, pedagogy or sociology. The members of Academia Sinica have much higher advantage over common faculty members to be the presidents in public universities, while those having been presidents of other universities have the advantage to be the presidents of private universities. However, no significant difference between general universities and technological universities are noted. The results presented can be used as a reference for discussion on education reform and ideal universities for Taiwan.
