Symptom management is an important nursing activity to improve patients' quality of life. Developing the body of knowledge of symptom management will underpin the effectiveness of healthcare. Finding problems from the clinic, constructing knowledge through research to respond to clinical problems, and synthesizing research findings to establish a theoretical model can guide practice and further research. This interactive process allow to close the gap among practice, research, and theory. The Symptom Management Theory (SMT) is inductive from the research findings of different ethnic groups with various symptoms. SMT is advocated that effective symptom management must consider symptom experience, symptom management strategies, and outcomes. These three essential components are influenced by the nursing science dimensions of person, health and illness, and environment. The SMT is applicable and appropriate for guiding research and developing practice guideline.
