Establishing Equivalence of a Survey Instrument for College Students to Investigate Snacking Patterns when Translating from English to Mandarin

建立中英文測量工具的一致性,探討大學學生食用點心之行為模式

摘要


本研究旨在建立測量工具「探討大學生食用點心的行爲模式」之信度和效度及建立此測量工具的中英文一致性。問卷内容是以謝(2004)的研究爲基礎,Vdllerand的六個翻譯步驟應用於食用點心問卷,從英文的版本翻譯成中文版本,結果顯示中英文版本並無翻譯後的差異,信度顯示此問卷有高的内部一致性,中文版本的問卷顯示此問卷是有效的測量工具來探討大學生食用點心的行爲模式,超過百分之五十的學生回答當他們和朋友在一起或是趕時間的時候,大部分會選擇簡便的點心食用。這指出了社交活動及食物的便利性在學生食用點心的模式占很重要的角色。此研究結果將提升學校衛生專業人員例如:學校護理人員、營養師及雇主對於大學生食用點心的行爲模式的警覺性,並發展一套有效計畫及政策來提高支持性的健康促進環境。這一套嚴謹的翻譯技巧提升了此研究工具的信度與效度,同時未來若有機會進行跨文化研究的比較時,翻譯是一項國際間重要的議題,使用此翻譯技巧更可提高了研究工具的品質。

The purpose of this study was to establish the equivalence of an instrument for college students to investigate snacking patterns when translating from English to Mandarin. The contextual content is based on Hsieh's (2004) study. Six of Vallerand's steps were used as the methodical translation of a questionnaire, the Snack Foods Questionnaire, from English to Mandarin. The results revealed there was no significant difference between the original English questionnaire and Mandarin questionnaire. The validation study indicated good internal consistency. The Mandarin version of the questionnaire thus is a valid tool for investigating colleague students' snacking patterns. Over 50% of students reported that when they spent time with friends or in a hurry, they more likely chose snack foods. This indicated that the social activities and food availability played important roles in students' snacking patterns. The result of the study will raise awareness of school health professionals such as school nurses, dieticians and their employers and will help in the development of appropriate support programmes and policies to enhance a supportive environment for health promotion. The rigorous translation technique has enhanced the reliability and validity of the instrument. It adds to the quality of the instrument and offers opportunities in the future to undertake cross-cultural comparison in an issue of great concern globally.
