This article aims to clarify as well as justify Ricoeur's concept of recognition while showing that the concept did not arise suddenly. Moreover, I would like to show that the French word reconnaissance used by Ricouer and translated into English as recognition is best translated into Chinese as 肯認. Initially, I would like to return to Ricoeur's last work, The course of recognition, and show how he arrived at the notion of recognition from Hegel's concept of Anerkennung, then investigate the French lexicography of the reconnaissance from which the philosophical meaning will be revealed as capacity of recognition or priority of being recognized. We then can find a hermeneutics of Ricouer's idea of recognition manifested between epistemology and ethics before proceeding to construct a self hermeneutics in relation to the concern of others.
