In spite of the growing awareness of the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity to human welfare, loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems still continue on a large scale. Therefore, government agencies put ecological conservation and the implementation of the Ecological Check (EC) in key projects. The Ecological Check can be divided into The Ecological Check for Engineering Project and The Ecological Check for Management Planning. The The Ecological Check for Engineering Project is adapted to the engineering lifecycle, including planning, design, construction, operations & maintenance phase, and considered in interdisciplinary fields. The Ecological Check for Management Planning is focus on improving and renovating water environment, and maintain biodiversity in all river habitats and prevent coastal erosion. the Ecological Check is not only decreed by Public Construction Commission Executive Yuan on April 25th, 2017, but also promoted to key operations by Water Resources Agency, MOEA. The Ecological Check focus on ecological assessments, public engagement, and open information. The major works of ecological assessment are (1) environmental review of the project site, (2) habitat evaluation and ecological survey, (3) mapping of conservational importance, (4) impact assessment and mitigation strategies. The strategies including avoidance, minimization, mitigation and compensation. the Ecological Check has been widely applied and well accepted on engineering projects. We hope that Ecological Check will continue to be a useful approach in realizing both watershed management and environmental conservation in the future.
