Bioherbicidal Potential of Leaf-residue of Hyptis suaveolens on the Growth and Physiological Parameters of Parthenium hysterophorus L.

並列摘要

The effects of dry leaf-residues of Hyptis suaveolens L. on the growth and physiological parameters of Parthenium hysterophorus L. was studied in pot culture. Different growth parameters of Parthenium such as size and number of the leaves, height, branches, capitula and seeds/plant were inhibited by leaf residues of H. suaveolens. The amount of chlorophyll and protein was decreased with increased amount of residue. The inhibition in growth parameters of Parthenium hysterophorus was due to decrease in chlorophyll, sugar, protein and lipid contents while organic and amino acids were increased in treatments. The accumulation of organic acid reveals that respiration was hampered in test plant and increase in the amino acids might be the adaptation strategy of Parthenium to avoid environmental stress generated by the allelochemicals present in leaf residues of Hyptis. The decrease in the amount of lipids was proportional to the quantity of dry leaf residues used. The altered physiological parameters result in inhibited growth of Parthenium and the leaf residues of Hyptis suaveolens may be used as potent bioherbicide to control the spread of Parthenium.
