Self-Identity and Difficult Position of Homosexuality in Christian Church

Purpose: This study aims at exploring the interaction process of faith and sexual orientation of homosexual Christian including the course of self-identity, Christian attitudes toward homosexual Christians, and development of strategies for surviving in a Christian community among homosexual Christians. Research method: This study applied purposive sampling and snowball sampling, the final sample comprised five (male and female) homosexual Christians. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted, and the interview data were subject to thematic analysis to draw out commonalities in the interviewees' experiences. Research results: With regard to self-identity, the study shows clearly that all of the interviewees felt more frustrated in self-struggle phase, linger about in the stage of tolerance and affirmation and finally built up self-synthesis based on strong connection with faith. As for Christian attitudes toward homosexual Christians, the study points out that all of the interviewees had unfriendly treatment and experiences. In regard to the strategies for survival, homosexual Christians continue to join the church through avoidance, relying on god, finding the sense of belonging. Conclusion: Homosexual Christians face negative experiences as a result of their sexuality. This has affected the development of their self-identity and has also led them to devise survival strategies that allow them to reconcile their faith with their sexuality.
