Sexual Health in the Post-Pandemic Era: Self-Regulation Strategies for Maintaining Sexually Active Under Taiwan's COVID-19 Alerts

As Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is continuing to grow, abstinence and masturbation seen as effective ways to maintain social distancing, however, both sexual behaviors are not likely good for sexual health. According to research, keeping sexually active is a good way to promote sexual health, and human-to-human sex is good for sexual health due to better intimacy. The pandemic in Taiwan was relatively stable. To promote sexual health, the public should be encouraged to dynamically adjust their sexual behavior and maintain a high-quality sexual life. The content analysis was adopted. After collecting domestic and international coping strategies for maintaining sexual health during COVID-19 pandemic era, the self-regulation theory was adopted to categorize coping strategies by Taiwan's COVID-19 alerts so that the government and the public can reach a consensus. The results were as follow: (1) At COVID-19 alert level 1, pay attention to activities of daily life and health status of sexual partners. (2) At COVID-19 alert level 2, have sex with a fixed partner and use safer sex measures to reduce risks, COVID-19 infection included. (3) Above COVID-19 alert level 3, preferably non-contact sex. (4) Better understand risks to sexual health posed by COVID-19 pandemic. The proposals were as follow: (1) Redefine safer sex. (2) Advocate sexual rights for singles and sexual minorities. (3) Further studies on benefits of establishing sex trade zone for safer sex.
