The Impact of Hypoxic Chamber Training on the Cognitive Performance of Middle-Distance and Long-Distance Runners

Objective: This study aims to explore the effects of hypoxic chamber training on the cognitive functions of middle- and long-distance runners, specifically focusing on the enhancement of spatial reaction initiation ability and visuospatial short-term memory. Methods: The study utilized a controlled experimental design with middle- and long-distance runners as subjects, randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group underwent treadmill training in a hypoxic chamber, while the control group performed the same treadmill training in a normoxic environment. Both groups underwent cognitive function tests before and after training, which included assessments of spatial reaction initiation ability and visuospatial short-term memory. Relevant physiological data such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels were also collected. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement in spatial reaction initiation ability after hypoxic training, with notably reduced reaction times under various cue conditions. Additionally, in the visuospatial short-term memory tests, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement across all indicators, showing increased memory capacity, accuracy, and stability. In contrast, the control group did not exhibit significant changes in most variables between the pre- and post-tests.Conclusion: Hypoxic chamber training has a significantly positive impact on the cognitive functions of middle- and long-distance runners, particularly in the areas of spatial reaction initiation ability and visuospatial short-term memory.
