Internet Heterogeneity and Political Discussion: Examining Political Discussion Patterns of Facebook users in Taiwan

This study employed the O-S-R-O-R model to investigate the behaviors of political communication on social media (Facebook) in Taiwan during the 2018 nine-in-one local elections. The results show that people in heterogeneous network tended not to have discussions through Facebook or face-to-face discussions over political issues. On the contrary, people inside echo chambers tended to be more open in interpersonal and FB discussions. In terms of promoting rationality in political attitudes, traditional media functioned better than social media. The Facebook usage was even negatively correlated with rationality in political attitudes. To sum up, in the political communication model in Taiwan, the path of political participation using Facebook can be described as follows: the social media use promoted political discussions on Facebook and increased active and community political participations of its users. Findings of the study agreed with the O-S-R-O-R model. People in echo chambers mainly relied on social media for political information; in other words, social media was an important tool to influence people with similar political ideologies.
