Hong Shen keens to rearrange foreign plays, then adapted them to Chinese audience. But he didn't translate American dramatist Eugene O'Neill's work what impact on his own creation. Since that Hong's script "Yama Zhao" clearly referenced O'Neill's "The Emperor Jones" in terms of plot structure. The pure Chinese background in "Yama Zhao", and the similar story to "The Emperor Jones", hindered that translate it into Chinese characteristic, which means to rewrite "Yama Zhao". Based on the consideration of his personal reputation, Hong even rarely mentioned O'Neill in public at that time. However, the different cultural and political backgrounds and Hong's individual experiences led him to introduce and translate O'Neill and "The Emperor Jones" in 1930s. The dissimilar artistic viewpoints between the two dramatists, induced Hong's intentional alienation and inevitable misunderstanding to O'Neill. These mistranslation and omissions of the drum sound in his translation, denied the expressionist feature in this O'Neill's masterpiece definitely.
