This systematic review consolidates multiple studies to explore the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on athletic performance and body composition. HIIT is a training method that combines high-intensity exercises with intervals of rest, characterized by short-duration, high-energy workouts interspersed with brief recovery periods. Methods: This review conducted a literature search in databases including Airiti Library, PubMed, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies published between 2017 and 2024. The English keywords used were: High-Intensity Interval Training, Sport performance, Aerobic capacity training, Anaerobic capacity training, and Sport-specific capacity training. A systematic review approach was applied to evaluate the effects of HIIT on athletic performance. Conclusions: Recent studies increasingly indicate that HIIT not only enhances aerobic and anaerobic capacities to improve athletic performance but also serves as an effective method for designing customized training programs for sport-specific athletes. By simulating competitive scenarios or sport-specific techniques integrated with interval training, HIIT can significantly improve sport-specific performance. Compared to traditional aerobic training, HIIT is more time-efficient and enhances training effectiveness. In summary, HIIT provides an efficient and effective approach to improving both aerobic and anaerobic capacities and enables the development of tailored training programs for athletes. However, further research is needed to explore the effects of various HIIT training modes.
