Comparative Study of "Wu Wang Zai Ju": Evidence from Ju County in Shandong Province and Kinmen City in Fujian Province

"Wu Wang Zai Ju (毋忘在莒, Unforgettable experience in Ju)" is a shared memory of people on both sides of the strait, especially in Ju County, Shandong Province and Kinmen City, Fujian Province. However, it is interpreted differently depending on the temporal and spatial contexts. This paper, grounded in the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, uses literature collection and Berrydale's comparative education method to explore the meanings and connections of "Wu Wang Zai Ju" in Ju County and Kinmen. First, the interpretations of "Wu Wang Zai Ju" vary between Ju County and Kinmen. In Juxian County, it refers to the saying in Zhaoxian Town: recruiting talents and accommodating defectors, as well as Duke Huan of Qi seeking refuge in the state of Ju. However, in Taiwan (or among Kinmen residents), it is associated with Tian Dan's restoration of Qi's territory. This difference is notably manifested on the Wu-Wang-Zai-Ju inscribed rocks on Mount Taiwu in Greater Kinmen and Mount Yang in Lesser Kinmen. These inscriptions hold four historical significances: commemorating former President Chiang Kai-shek, propagating the spirit of "Wu Wang Zai Ju," bearing witness of the history of the battles in Kinmen, and facilitating cross-strait exchanges. Lastly, on the basis of cross-strait connection rooted in peaceful development, Ju County and Kinmen City both produce Wu-Wang-Zai-Ju sorghum liquor. A comparative analysis of the liquor factories, either state-owned or privately run, in each region reveals differences in their management; moreover, the taste and meaning of each product vary. Particularly, it is noteworthy that most of the casualties in the Battle of Guningtou were soldiers from the 28th Division of the People's Liberation Army of Shandong. Memorials have been built in Shandong and Fujian to honor the fallen soldiers. They symbolize the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, remind people on both sides to cherish peace, and more importantly, inspire them to strive for peace. To provide solace to the heroes on both sides, it is recommended that the governments of the strait formulate concrete and feasible plans to honor the sacrifice of the Shandong soldiers in the Battle of Guningtou as soon as possible.
