An Exploratory Study of Intercultural Communication Competence Scale in English Majors

英语专业学生跨文化交际能力量表编制研究初探

This study aims to develop a model of intercultural communication competence based on Mirzaei & Forouzandeh's Intercultural Communicative Competence Questionnaire and the Global Competence Scale for Graduate Students by Liu, Yin, & Wu. Both exploratory fact analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were carried out to formulate a trustworthy measure of intercultural communication competence scale for English majors. Eight models produced by examining the present data and the values of indices were deemed acceptable. Out of the 8 models that were created, the three-factor model of intercultural communication competence scale with 12 items representing intercultural cognition, intercultural behaviors, and intercultural affection significantly fit the current data. The model demonstrated strong internal consistency with Cronbach's α = 0.882 and McDonald's ω = 0.890, indicating good reliability. The average variance extracted (AVE) of the three factors was above the threshold at 0.625, 0.655, and 0.619, respectively. The findings imply that the features of a sample of English majors from a typical Chinese Normal university are compatible with this alternative model of intercultural communication competency.
