In order to provide highly qualified physicians that practice in medically underserved areas, and conduct physicians into less attractive medical specialties, there are two generations of the government sponsored medical education programs in Taiwan. The first generation started from 1975 in National Yang-Ming Medical College (Now is National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, NYCU), expanded this program in other medical schools in the following years, and ended in 2009. The second generation of government sponsored medical education program was restarted in 2016, and will come to an end in 2025. Due to the original mission of the School of Medicine in NYCU was cultivating government sponsored medical doctors, we reviewed the history, present and prospected programs of the Government Sponsored Medical Education Program in NYCU in this present article, and then hoped to contribute to the improvement of government sponsored medical education program in Taiwan.
