In 2010, Jimbun Shoin, a distinguished publishing house in Japan, published a collection of Sinophone Malaysian literature in translation. This collection offers Japanese readers a glimpse of the trends and diversity presented in modern Sino-Malaysian literature, as well as the historical relationship between Malaysia and Japan. The first translation in the collection, Chronicles of Jiling 吉陵春秋, a novel written by Li Yongping, is the focus of this paper. The paper begins with a study of the publication process for individual chapters of the novel. It goes on to analyze the ways in which the novel is interpreted in Taiwan. Before the novel was published in book form, it was serialized as a literary supplement in local newspapers. The serialized version was highly praised by literary Modernists. As a new reading method gradually emerged in the 1990s, calling for a close reading of the text and a contextual analysis of the work as a cultural product, Li's novel again attracted much attention from readers in Taiwan. Finally, by comparing the novel with its serialized version, the paper points out that there is a considerable discrepancy between the two versions. Through these discrepancies, we see how Li revises his novel to construct an ideal fictional world in order to distance his fictional world far away from reality.
