共產黨的傷痕、象與「內在中國」:論張貴興《群象》及其日譯本之翻譯特色

Communism Scars, Elephants and the Concept of "Inner-China": A Study on Zhang Guixing's Elephants and its Characteristics in Japanese Translation

摘要


張貴興在1990年之後陸續發表有關以婆羅洲熱帶雨林為舞台的小說,當中的《賽蓮之歌》(1992)、《群象》(1998)、《猴杯》(2000)更是他的代表作,被視為「雨林三部曲」,在台灣文壇掀起轟動的熱潮。本文所著重的研究對象《群象》,以馬來西亞砂拉越大鑼鎮及其附近的熱帶雨林為背景,而故事則徘徊於叢林中的「群象」傳說以及追獵這群大象的活動為主軸,時間跨度從1950年代後期由華人青年們組成「砂勞越共產黨(砂共)」開始,直至1974年滅亡為止,是一部具有政治色彩的小說,被視為探索馬華文學「黑暗之心」的著作。而本文所關注的,就是在《群象》當中所展現的共產黨傷痕及其背後的大馬華人歷史所產生的互動關係。除此,本文也會進一步解析《群象》中「象」的寓意和隱喻,探索南洋華人的「內在中國」思考面向。最後,本文將會討論有關日本版《群象》的特色以及《群象》翻譯過程中所面臨的馬來西亞華人語言的相關問題。

Zhang Guixing has continually published a series of novels set in Borneo's tropical rainforests since the 1990s. Among these novels, The Songs of Siren (1992), Elephants (1998) and Monkey Cups (2000) are considered to be his representative works. Known as the "Rain Forest Trilogy," these three novels have attracted much attention in Taiwanese literary circles. This paper is primarily an analysis of Elephants. Set deep in the rainforests of Daluo (or The Gong Making Town) in Sarawak, Malaysia, the novel recounts the legend of the wandering elephants in the rainforest. Central to the plot is the hunting of this wandering herd. The time span of the novel starts from the 1950s, when a group of Chinese youths establish the Sarawak Communist Party, and ends in 1974, when the Communist Party meets with its fate. This is a political novel, a work oft-known as Malaysia's "Heart of Darkness." This study first examines the scars of Communism in Elephants and the interaction between Chinese-Malaysians and their history. It then explores the concept of "inner-China," a pervading idea in Nanyang Chinese's mindset by further analyzing the metaphorical meaning of the ‘elephant' throughout the novel. Finally, the author turns to the novel's Japanese translation, discussing its unique characteristics and the linguistic problems encountered during the process of translation.
