O-Lan as a Dominating Heroine in Pearl S. Buck's Movie The Good Earth

Directed by Sidney Franklin, The Good Earth is a 1937 American drama film based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck. In this film, of all the characters, the audience sees a strong female figure O-Lan. Through her, both the author and the director show their essential admiration of the Chinese peasant with his (her) virtues. Throughout the movie, the audience sees a woman so humble, so full of endurance, tolerance and regenerative power as the very earth under our feet that, though trampled upon, yet is still productive and full of life, endowing the world with the power to last forever. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the protagonist O-Lan to see her greatness of character and see how the author, through the parallel structure of the movie, endows O-Lan as being great as the very earth which contains and nourishes the world.
