A Preliminary Study of Ikeda Riyoko's Comic Work "Rose of Versailles" Style and Female Consciousness

From 1972 to 1973, the comic "Rose of Versailles" (ベルサイユのばら) serialized in Japan's "Margaret" magazine is the " Year 24 Group " Ikeda Riyoko (1947- ), one of the classic representative works, Ikeda Riyoko added historical elements on the basis of shoujo manga, breaking through the boundaries of shoujo manga at that time, and became the first work to integrate history into shoujo manga, with a key position of inheriting the past and inspiring the future. The story is set in France, which was ruled by the Bourbon dynasty at the end of the 18th century, with the gorgeous and luxurious Palace of Versailles as the main background of the story, compose the two heroines, Queen Marie of France and Oscar, daughter of the general, the extension of their respective emotional lines in history and fate. The "Rose of Versailles" comic combines the historical events of the French Revolution, real and fictional characters, and Ikeda Riyoko's soft and delicate brushstrokes, movie-like storyboards, poetry-like comic dialogues, and the pursuit of authenticity for the comic background, put the reader in the fate of an 18th century entanglement. I hopes to find the elements that make up this shoujo manga by analyzing the manga text. It is mainly divided into three points: the history of the French Revolution, the painting style, and the preliminary exploration of female consciousness, and summarizes the important factors why the "Rose of Versailles" is influential in Japan.
