To explore the effects of physical activity on physical and mental health of middle to old people, the ”Ryodoraku counter” was used to measure the amount of electrical current in the 24 ryodoraku representative measuring points (acupuncture points) in the hands and feet of 25 (11 males, 14 females) middle to old aged people (between 40 and 81yrs) with different degrees of physical activity. Resulting data underwent statistical analysis by independent sample t-test. The results show that within the current 30~70μA for the normal physiological range, those with ”sufficient” physical activity have R currents that are significantly greater than those with ”slightly insufficient” and ”seriously insufficient” in terms of ”total R mean current” and ”H3 (heart), F2 (liver), F3 (kidneys), and F5 (gall bladder)” (p<.05~p<.01). Based on Japanese Ryodoraku theory, and in reference to visceral manifestations theory in Traditional Chinese medicine, within the range of normal physiology, higher the current in the ”total R mean current” or ”single R,” better the overall strength or the organs related to ”single R,” and the converse also stands. Thus, this study arrives at the following conclusion: physical activity maybe has the positive effects to enhance the overall vital strength of middle to old aged people, especially for strength relating to ”H3 (heart), F2 (liver), F3 (kidneys), and F5 (gall bladder).” Manifestations of this are in above average metabolism, adaptive ability to changes in the external environment and stimulations, disease-resistance and endurance. Especially in terms of the ”physical,” there is strong ability of physical activity, outstanding cardiovascular blood circulation, regulation of blood pressure, body temperature, and water, good digestion and absorption, balance of electrolytes, integration of neuron-endocrine systems, bile excretion, growth and nurturing of tendons-joint cartilage, and functions such as bone and blood production. In terms of the ”mental,” it stabilizes the spirit, so that one can be fully of joy and without fear mentally and physically, in a state of relaxation, with the parasympathetic nervous system at an advantage.
