Purpose: To investigate the effects of core muscle strength on the 200-m individual medley (IM) performance of senior high school swimmers. Methods: The participants were 10 male senior high school swimmers, and the data were collected over 3 days. On the first day, we recorded the swimmers' 200-m IM performance (time required to swim 4.8, 7.5, and 14.8 m for each swimming style, overall 200-m time, flight distance at swimming start, stroke frequency, turnaround time, and time spent submerged during the breaststroke) prior to exercise intervention. On the second day, each participant's trunk strength was tested in a laboratory by using an isokinetic dynamometer. The amount of core exercise intervention needed to reduce the swimmers' trunk muscle strength by 50% was recorded for the third-day test. On the third day, each swimmer's post-intervention 200-m IM performance was recorded. Swimming performance was recorded at 120 Hz by using six high-speed cameras. Results: The swimmers' time required to swim 7.5 and 14.8 m for the backstroke, time spent submerged during the breaststroke, and flight distance at swimming start got worse after undergoing the core exercise intervention. The differences in the other parameters were nonsignificant. Conclusion: Although the swimmers' reduced core muscle strength affected their backstroke and breaststroke performance, their overall performance in the 200-m IM was not significantly affected, which could be due to their movement compensations.
