Discussion of Empirical Research Directions of Dark Tourism

The term 'dark tourism' refers to tourist activities or experiences that involve themes of death or disaster. The term began to enter academic debate in the mid-1990s, and relevant empirical research emerged in the early 2000s. Besides explaining how the concept of dark tourism actually developed by reviewing the relevant literature, this paper will review the existing studies on dark tourism participants and planners to inspire future empirical research and help tourism planners consider how best to transform negative events into effective tourism resources. The conclusions suggest that future research should examine the correlation between the motivations of dark tourism participants and how participants can best recognize the importance of the service provided by dark tourism planners. In terms of the relevant literature on Taiwan, the current literature explores the tourism at war heritage and post-natural disaster sites. However, it can be considered as part of investigating tourism at the sites associated with past authoritarian rule. The discussion and recommendations in this paper offer dark tourism researchers a relevant theoretical framework and positive research directions for future study on the topic.
