Ai Piann Tsiah Ei Iann (愛拼才會贏; Struggling leads to winning ) is an easy to sing and catchy Taiwanese pop song, written in the Minnan dialect. In this paper, an IPA transcription of the lyrics is presented. This transcription was made by working closely together with Baitan Chen (陳百潭), the composer of both the melody and song lyrics. A statistical analysis of the phonological elements was conducted in order to find the rules of their internal arrangement. Further observations were made of the relation between the linguistic tones in the song lyrics and the song's melody in order to investigate their complementary nature. The results show that the syllables with the main vowel "i" frequently precede and are contrasted with syllables having the main vowel "a", sometimes occurring as simple "i"-"a" pairs and sometimes occurring with several "i"s followed by several "a"s. This contrast is a fundamental element of the song's lyrics. When coupled together with the rhyming of nasal endings, it creates an effect that can be described as relatively quiet sounds being followed by relatively loud sounds. Combined with the uneven and repeated use of initials, the phonological elements of this song are woven together to create a rich variety of sound effects. The linguistic tones of the song lyrics also have a strong tendency to cooperate with the melody, creating a type of "singing by way of reading" effect.
