A krukenberg ovarian tumor originated from primary colon adenocarcinoma

Krukenberg tumors are metastatic tumors to the ovary that contain well-defined histological characteristics, mucin-secreting "signet ring" cells, and most commonly originate from the gastrointestinal tract. It accounts for 1~2% of all ovarian tumors. The stomach is the most common primary site, followed by the large intestine. In this article, we present a rare type of Krukenberg tumor, that originated from the colon. Interestingly, the patient presents her initial symptoms as postmenopausal bleeding and a pelvic mass. After a thorough evaluation at our institute, she was eventually diagnosed with colon cancer, stage IV with a right ovarian Krukenberg tumor. Due to its rarity and atypical presentation, we also discussed the clinical-pathologic features and the current treatment of the Krukenberg tumor in this article.
