Beneficial Effect of "Super 13 Pro & Prebiotics Lactic Acid Bacteria Granules" on Intestinal Microflora in Healthy Adults

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the "Super 13 Pro & Prebiotics Lactic Acid Bacteria Granules" (referred to as complex probiotics hereafter) on intestinal microflora. This product is manufactured by GRAPE KING BIO LTD and contains the following bacteria: Bifidobacterium lactis, B. bifidum, B. breve, B. longum, B. infantis, B. adolescentis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, Leuconostoc cremoris, and Pediococcus pentosaceus. According to the "Methods for Evaluating the Improvement in Gastrointestinal Function by Healthy Foods (2003)" published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan, forty individuals were recruited and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups with 20 subjects in each group. In the 4-week trial period, experimental subjects were given the complex probiotics, and control subjects received placebo daily. Feces were collected from each subject and analyzed by bacterial culture at weeks 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 for Bifidobacterium spp., Clostridium perfringens, Lactobacillus spp., and Coliforms Results showed that the number of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in the feces of experimental subjects were significantly higher than in those of control subjects after 2 weeks of treatment. At the end of 4th week, the number of Bifidobacterium was 2.981-fold higher and that of Lactobacillus was 5.607-fold higher in the feces of experimental subjects than in those of control subjects. After 3 weeks of treatment, Bifidobacterium/Clostridium perfringens ratio (B/C value) of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. In summary, the complex probiotics significantly enriched the population of good bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus and reduced the population of bad bacteria such as Clostridium perfringens. Taken together, results of this study suggest that the complex probiotics are beneficial to the maintena nce of a healthy intestinal flora.
