In his Lectures on the Philosophy of Spirit 1827-8, Hegel deduces lucidly how Subjective Spirit reaches its culmination in Free Spirit. Intellect has already known that reason's Begriff determination is inner finality through the development of Theoretical Spirit; Will has already known that its vocation is to implement its inner finality through the development of Practical Spirit. Spirit knows that itself is truth, taking itself to be the object of cognition; Spirit knows that itself is good, taking itself to be the object of volition. Such knowledge and action of spirit's inner finality constitute the proper significance of freedom, from which Free Spirit derives its name. Besides, such knowledge being acquired via the mediation of a logical sequence of intuition, representation, thought, practical feeling, impulse, and happiness, is hence rational and concrete.
