The Elderly-friendly Bus Stop Design-Using a Taichung Bus System as an Example

Abstracts

In Taiwan's metropolitan area, most of the bus waiting environments are located in front of buildings or stores due to space constraints; the public environment is impacting the inconveniences of the elderly with the advent of an aged society. In view of this, this study was divided into three stages. In the first stage, the existing but waiting environment in the Taichung metropolitan area was examined from a service design perspective, and the waiting behaviors, items carried by hand, and movement lines of the elderly were recorded. In the second stage, three elderly participants aged 65 years or older were recruited to extract their bus waiting needs with the KJ method. Then, in the third stage, the metropolitan bus stop signs were designed by optimizing the functions according to the results of the first two stages. The results of this study indicate that the overall design of the friendly bus stop sign should be oriented towards that (1). the elderly can feel at ease to attract the bus, (2). the waiting environment should offer physical comfort, and (3). the planning of the traffic flow for getting on and off the bus, as well as the bus stop signs should be adjusted gradually in the direction of meeting the physical and psychological needs of the elderly to make it easier and more convenient for the elderly to take public transportation.
