The Maker's open source platform has launched electronic hardware and App software developed with a visual program, enabling non-engineering students to independently complete the prototype production of IoT smart products, which represents a new trend. The main objective of this study is to plan a two-semester product development course and STEM-related courses, and teach industrial design students how to use Arduino and App Inventor 2 to make smart product prototypes. The research involved 15 third-year students from the Department of Industrial Design using an action research method. The results revealed that through Arduino teaching and hands-on learning, students were able to create a practical pet automatic feeder. Additionally, students learned App Inventor 2 to design an interactive game app, necessitating the course teacher's assistance to complete App design and online operation. The study also introduced Arduino and App Inventor 2 into product development courses, providing students with a preliminary understanding of electronic engineers and programmers' thinking and an initial experience in designing and operating electronic hardware and interactive interfaces of IoT.
