在乾燥稀薄空氣之下,用γ放射線照射香茅醛,可產生一湖薄荷腦(isopulegol)及香茅醛之二分子聚合體,其轉化率隨條件之不同而異。用γ放射線照射單獨香茅醛,轉化率很小,若加促進劑照射之,則轉化率立即增高,但以活性白土為最有效,同時γ放射線照射量多時或溫度高時,轉化率亦隨之增多。關於分離異胡薄荷腦與香茅醛以用酜酐法最佳,酜酐可將異胡薄荷腦變成酸性酜酸酯,而不與香茅醛起作用,用低壓分餾可將香茅醛蒸出,殘渣再用碳酸鈉處理之,即得異胡薄荷腦,作者並製得異胡薄荷腦之苯二甲酸銀(silver phthalate of isopulegol),淺黃色結晶,熔點165-167°C。
On exposure to r-ray in a closed vessel in the absence of moisture and air, citronellal can be changed into isopulegol and it's dimolecular polymer. This conversion varies with different conditions. If the citronellal is exposed to the r-ray alone the conversion is small, but in the presence of a promotor such as active clay, the conversion increases considerably. In the augmentation of reaction temperature or r-ray total dose, the conversion increases also. The phthalic anhydride gives the best separation of isopulegol from citronellal because it combines selectively with isopulegol into hydrogen phthalate, leaving behind unreacted citronellal which can be removed by vacuum distillation. The isopulegol in the residue can be liberated with sodium carbonate. It has also succeeded to prepare silver phthalate of isopulegol as a yellow-pale crystalline compound, m.p. 16 5-167℃.
