自2007年起,教育部學海計畫已補助上萬名大學生赴海外研讀學分或實習,大專院校薦送學生出國進修蔚為風潮。有鑑於外語為海外學習及生活不可或缺的要素,國內又甚少研究探討海外研修與外語的相關運用,本研究以七位獲2013-2014年「學海飛颺」計畫選送赴美研修四個月「以英語為第二外語(ESL)」課程的學生為對象,主要採用問卷與半結構式訪談蒐集資料,以探究海外研修期間學生於課堂外應用英語之經驗,以及此經驗對其英語學習的影響。期望透過本研究之發現,了解在美國研修ESL的外語環境、學習情況及效用,以助未來的研修生設立較為實際的外語學習目標,獲致更佳的學習成效;本研究亦提出建議,期使大專院校協助學海飛颺學生選擇適合之研修課程,並透過督導機制,促進其外語學習動機與應用能力。
Since the year 2007, the Ministry of Education has sponsored and sent nearly 13,500 college students abroad to study or serve internships via three different scholarships. As an integral and essential element of life in a foreign country, language shapes the study abroad (SA) experience and deserves to be explored. This study, therefore, aimed to examine the out-of-class English contact during SA and its impact on language learning. A questionnaire and semi-interviews were adopted to collect data from seven students who were granted "The Scholarships for Excellent Students to Study Abroad" for a four-month ESL credit program in the USA during 2013-2014. Results of the study provide a reference for future SA students to set attainable language learning goals, and for school supervisors to help students choose suitable programs and give proper interventions during students' study abroad.
