Pilots are the dream job for many people, but in Taiwan's aviation industry, many senior civil aviators are the ones who used to be pilots in the military. Trainings and career developments are different for military and civil aviators and academic studies on such issues. Therefore, this present study aims to shed light on those ex-military civil aviators' life planning after retirement through qualitative research design. Individual interviews with 7 retired aviators were undertaken to explore how they dealt with active ageing. The results of the study found that the participants' decision to retire from the military mainly resulted from the fact of not being able to be promoted, the government policy changes, economic factors, career planning. As for their reasons to retire as a civil aviator included the factors of age, physical condition, special occurrences which alter their perspectives, economic factors and another opportunity of employment. Pilots' retired life can respond specifically to three pillars of active ageing: personal health issue, social participation as well as social security policy, to achieve the purpose of active aging. Results of this study will serve as a reference for the relevant units to develop retirement policies. In addition, the study will make recommendations for future research.
