The so-called heteronyms are words that share the same pronunciation and meaning but have different forms. The existence of heteronyms can create challenges in conveying messages and learning languages. Therefore, the National Education Research Institute of the Ministry of Education has established a “Heteronym Review Panel” to analyze over five hundred sets of heteronyms that are prevalent in Taiwan. I previously published analyses of heteronym sets formed due to historical and contemporary character relationships in the 10th issue of the Journal of General Education at National Defense University (September 2020). Additionally, I discussed heteronym sets formed due to variant character usages in the 11th issue of the same journal (September 2021). I continue to engage in the analysis of heteronym sets, having compiled more than ten sets of noun, adjective, and adverb heteronyms formed through the use of homophonic synonyms, homographs, variant characters, or other morphological approaches. In this article, we will further elucidate the standards used by the panel to differentiate heteronyms and provide recommendations for suitable word forms for circulation, based on this ongoing group effort.
