Preliminary Visitor Research on Parents' Expectations and Children's Preferences in the Children's Hall of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology

The Children's Hall of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology has been in existence for more than one year. It is a space for preschool and elementary school-aged children and their parents to learn about marine life, industries, and conservation together. The aim of this visitor research project is to understand the level of visitor satisfaction regarding the design of the hall, especially the interactive facilities. Are visitors satisfied and do they understand the scientific and conservation concepts that the design is attempting to communicate? The results can provide a reference for improving the quality of education. In-depth interviews were carried out with a parent or adult accompanying at least one child aged 2-8. Parental views of informal education refer to those on education provided by institutions such as museums. The results of this study showed that the expectation of parents of children aged 2-5 is simply to make their children happy. When a child has an inquiry about or shows interest in operating an exhibit, the parent assists in reading the panel or explaining the content. In contrast, parents of children aged 6-10 years believe that the knowledge provided in the Children's Hall is not comprehensive or deep enough and do not expect that their children can discover or acquire knowledge through self-operated exhibits. Children prefer role-playing zones, fishing boat operation, and racing with marine life. Finally, we respond to parents' suggestions for improving the educational function, discussing the possibilities for setting object observation guidelines, adjusting teaching aids and providing parents with supplemental information.
