Merit-making was the main aim for Catholics to pursuit virtues and conduct charities during late Ming. The core concept of merit-making is to fulfill the doctrine of love. Aijin Xingquan (De operibus Misericordiae), written by Jesuit Luo Yagu (Jacques Rho, 1593-1638), provided a detailed and practical guideline for Catholics to practise charities and also provided a text resource for Wang Zheng (1571-1644) to create a charity named Benevolent Society (renhui) during late Ming. This article firstly discusses the life of Jacques Rho and his editor group. Then it explores the editions of Aijin Xingquan and the main contents of the fourteen works of mercy. At last the author illustrates the influences of Aijing Xingquan by case study on Renhui yue (Statutes ofBenevolent Society). It played a significant role to spread Catholicism for missionaries by introducing Catholic ethics by books as Aijin Xingquan and this book also had a profound impact on Confucian Catholics during late Ming and early Qing.
