The concept of the 〞east〞 (□□□) has a particular meaning in the historical development of the religion of ancient Israel, playing an important role especially in constructing and maintaining the identity of the Israelite community in the post-exilic period. This article focuses on the concept of 〞east〞 used in the Tower of Babel narrative of Genesis 11:1-9; exploring how Genesis 11:1-9 reinterprets the traditional concept of the 〞east〞, and how the concept of 〞east〞 in Genesis 11:1-9 is socially constructed in the historical context of the early Persian period. On the one hand, the concept of 〞east〞 in Genesis 11:19 unifies the theme of 〞exile〞 in Genesis 2-3 and 4, reappropriating the meaning of the 〞east〞 in the historical context as 〞Return to Zion〞; on the other hand, the concept of the 〞east〞 in Genesis 11:1-9 echoes the use of the 〞east〞 in the patriarchal narrative of Genesis 12-50 on the thematic level, reinterpreting the traditional meaning of the 〞east〞 in the Israelite culture, thus giving the new connotation of the 〞east〞 based on the early Achaemenid Persian Empire.
