This paper reviews archaeological studies about colonial activities in early modern maritime East and Southeast Asia, focusing on three research themes: port cities, colonial settler communities, and indigenous communities. The archaeology of port cities provides new evidence for discussing the development of each port city before and after colonization. The focus on ceramics in this type of research complements the studies of kiln sites; the results also create a dialogue with the silver and silk trade in historical accounts. Among the study of colonial settler communities, the research of the activities of the Chinese and Japanese settlers in European colonies breaks our general impressions of European colonies; the case from Taiwan further brings Asian colonists into the discussion. Finally, the archaeology of indigenous communities leads us to see the diverse agencies of the natives, whether the colonists directly controlled them or not. Through these discussions, the authors emphasize that historical archaeology has excellent potential for understanding the development of East and Southeast Asian waters since the early modern period.
